Maigh Cuilinn 96
Tipp Talons 81
Kingfisher, University of Galway – 3 Oct 26
New season, but the same old problems for opposing defences.
Maigh Cuilinn captain Grant Olsson began his eighth season with the club in emphatic fashion on Saturday night, pouring in 30 points in just 25 minutes as his side opened their 2026/27 Men’s National League campaign with a convincing 96-81 victory over Tipp Talons at the Kingfisher, University of Galway Sports Arena.
Foul trouble ultimately limited Olsson’s time on the floor and eventually brought his evening to a premature conclusion when he fouled out with a little under three minutes remaining. By then, however, his work was largely done. Maigh Cuilinn led 89-72, the outcome was no longer seriously in doubt, and their returning captain had already put down an early marker for the season ahead.
The final margin perhaps disguised the fact that this was a contest which, for a time, looked capable of developing very differently.
A back-and-forth opening quarter saw Tipp remain firmly in touch, with Maigh Cuilinn taking a 25-18 advantage into the first break. Early in the second, the home side’s lead stood at just five, 30-25, and there was little at that stage to suggest the game would soon begin to tilt decisively in their favour.
What followed was arguably the most important passage of the night, and one that demonstrated the balance between youth and experience in this Maigh Cuilinn team.
Veteran Dylan Cunningham first produced a block on Tipp Talons’ American Christopher Gayles Junior. The rejection immediately sparked a fast break, with young Donagh McDonagh pushing the ball up the floor before finding John Hynes for the finish.
Shortly afterwards, Ivan Basic forced a turnover and picked out Cunningham for an easy score of his own. Then Olsson joined in, stealing the ball and taking it to the basket himself.
In the space of a few possessions, a five-point advantage had become 11 and the complexion of the contest had changed completely.
From that point onwards, it rarely felt like a game Maigh Cuilinn were going to allow to escape them.
They took a 41-30 advantage into half-time and, although Tipp produced one brief challenge early in the third quarter, Maigh Cuilinn always had an answer.
A 6-0 Talons run brought the margin back to seven, with Spaniard Xabis Arriaga underlining his threat by knocking down a three-pointer and following it with another basket in quick succession.
It was about as close as the visitors would get.
Maigh Cuilinn steadied themselves quickly, with Brendan Hardiman and Antonio Molina doing particularly good work defensively and helping to create the turnovers and mismatches from which the home side were able to attack at the other end.
They exploded for 31 points in the third quarter, stretching their advantage to 72-56 entering the fourth, and although Tipp edged the final period 25-24, the damage had long since been done.
Olsson may have led the scoring, but this was far from a one-man performance.
Basic, back for his fourth season with the club, looked in particularly sharp form. The guard finished with 25 points, eight assists and two steals in an energetic all-round display, while also shooting an outstanding four from five from three-point range.
His efficiency was part of a wider difference between the sides on the night.
Maigh Cuilinn connected on 10 of their 24 three-point attempts, shooting 42 per cent from beyond the arc. Tipp, by contrast, managed just four makes from 23 attempts, a 17 per cent return.
Returning Maigh Cuilinn player Joseph Morris also made an immediate contribution from distance, knocking down both of his three-point attempts on his way to six points.
Molina was the third Maigh Cuilinn player into double figures with 10, while Cunningham contributed eight and James Loughnane added seven. Morris had six, Hynes four, while McDonagh and Hardiman scored three apiece.
The significance of the victory, however, was less about any one number than the manner in which it was put together.
There were the familiar qualities of Olsson, carrying a huge offensive threat whenever he was on the court, and Basic producing the kind of assured display expected of a player now well established with the club. But around them came contributions from throughout the rotation, with veterans and younger players involved in the spell which turned a competitive opening into a commanding Maigh Cuilinn advantage.
For the opening night of a new campaign, it represented an assured start: 96 points on the board, ten made three-pointers and contributions throughout the squad.
Maigh Cuilinn scorers: Grant Olsson 30, Ivan Basic 25, Antonio Molina 10, Dylan Cunningham 8, James Loughnane 7, Joseph Morris 6, John Hynes 4, Donagh McDonagh 3, Brendan Hardiman 3; Rory O’Sullivan, Rhys Plower, Darragh Kelly.
