Maigh Cuilinn made history on Sunday afternoon, travelling to Drogheda for their first ever BIDL Women’s fixture, and marking the occasion in style with a 75–61 victory over the Boyne Warriors.
The Galway side started slowly, trailing 12–17 after the opening quarter, as Boyne came out firing behind strong play from their guards and an aggressive press that disrupted Maigh Cuilinn’s rhythm. But once the visitors settled, their defensive intensity and balanced scoring began to shine. A composed 19–11 second quarter swung momentum, before a dominant 23–8 third quarter surge blew the game wide open.

Veteran guard Julie-Ann Russell led the charge with an assured 18 point performance, dictating tempo and delivering key baskets when it mattered most. Rising star Lily Hynes provided a perimeter spark, hitting multiple three pointers on her way to 16 points. Sarah Folan and Leah Cunningham added 10 each – Cunningham dominant in the paint against Boyne’s physical frontcourt.
Off the bench, Eabheann Conneely made a strong impact, her perfect free-throw shooting helping steady the team late on. Justine Gadioux chipped in with 7 points and tireless defensive effort, while Jenny McDonagh contributed key baskets in transition, running the floor to keep Maigh Cuilinn’s momentum rolling.
To their credit, Boyne Warriors never backed down. Their late game rally cut a 24 point deficit to 14, with several impressive scoring bursts and determined defensive stops showing real fight. The hosts’ energy and physicality throughout ensured Maigh Cuilinn were pushed to maintain focus to the final buzzer.
Head Coach Grant Olsen’s rotation showcased impressive depth and balance, with all eleven players contributing energy and intensity. Defensively, Maigh Cuilinn’s collective discipline stood out, forcing Boyne into rushed shots and turning turnovers into transition scores.
All told, it was a statement debut win to open Maigh Cuilinn’s inaugural BIDL campaign – and a memorable first chapter in the club’s women’s programme.
