St. Stephen’s Day 2018 saw the Annual Blitz played under the mildest and driest conditions seen in many years down in the school in Moycullen. With temperatures reaching a balmy 13 degrees, not a drop of rain in sight (never mind snow and ice), the huge crowds that turned up over the course of the day were treated to one of the highest quality Blitzes in memory.
With three games going to OverTime and only one game a “blow-out” it was also probably the most competitive Blitz that we’ve had. After the 12 group games and two smashing semi-finals we were down to the two finalists with Joseph Tummon’s team playing that ever present surname in a Blitz final as he took on Kyle Cunningham’s team.
After a pulsating final that ebbed and flowed it was Joseph’s team the emerged as fully deserving victors and claim the 2018 edition of this fantastic occasion.
Congratulations to Dave Carr, who this year was the very well deserving recipient of the Padraig Kelly “Spirit of the Blitz Award”.
To Joseph Tummon who not only captained his team but also put in an MVP performance and was released from the Hall of Shame.
Our very deserving champions who saw off every team that they faded in this year’s Blitz; congrats lads.
The winning team: Josh Marvesley, James Cummins, Joseph Tummon, James O’Brien, Dave Carr, Stephen O’Brien.
James Loughnane was inducted into the Hall of Fame as his victory in last year’s Blitz saw him reach that magical number of 4 Blitz wins.
Special thanks to the those who their lent baskets for use during the day; Sean Hynes & the Convery’s. Also many thanks to the organisers who ran a super day, all the refs and table officials who ensured that the game not only ran smoothly but also had the right amount of fun and craic that makes the Blitz so special; Eoghan, Dylan, Gerald, Cian, Kyle, Martin, Cormac, Declan & Dave in particular for all their organising, time and hard work.
To all the players who turned who early and stayed around for the whole day to enjoy a fantastic day; great to see so many of the “old” faces still playing and enjoying the game so much.
Another highlight was to see so many of our underage players down all day enjoying the fun while also getting some practice in for when they get on the hallowed tarmac during St. Stephen’s Day.
And last but by not means least to all those who came down to enjoy the games, atmosphere and craic during the day. The crowds during the whole day were huge and probably the biggest crowd ever was in attendance for what was a great final.
We’ll be posting more photos from this years Blitz over the course of the next few days so stay tuned.
Roll on new year!!!!!
