An excited group set off for Barcelona in the early morning of Saturday 24th March, to participate in GLOBASKET 2018. This is an international tournament, for boys and girls aged u12 to u16 with teams participating from all over Europe.
We were a group of 21, including 15 players plus 5 parents and our coach for the tournament, Pamela O Brien. We had spent a long day travelling and arrived at the hotel tired and hungry, late the first night. Fortunately, the tournament organisers had kept the restaurant open so that we could have a midnight snack when we arrived, much to everyone’s delight as we had spent over 12 hours reaching our destination.
We were based in the beautiful seaside resort of Lloret de Mer which had amazing sports facilities.
Our first game was played locally against a Finnish team, Lepy. We had a second game in the afternoon in the nearby town of Blanes in which the girls played very competitively against an Andalusian team San Calixto. Their third game v Union Girona was hard fought but eventually Moycullen came out winners by a margin of one point.
Over the next few days Moycullen fought bravely against strong competition against teams from Poland (MKS Czechowice) and the Czech Republic (Sokol Kladno). The standard of basketball was really high and the girls put in some wonderful individual and team performances.
We did manage to fit in some sight-seeing and had a great day out in Barcelona doing the hop on hop off bus tour of the city, finally making our way to the Cathedral Sagrada Familia. As a group of 21 women we of course manged to fit in some shopping in between our sight-seeing!
We would like to thank all those who helped to make this trip so memorable including the parents who came along to supervise the girls; Bernice, Margaret, Maria, Vicky and our coach Pamela and to Barry for preparing the team for the competition and for organising the trip.
We would also like to thank our sponsors Margaret & Joe Bohan of Dela café/restaurant/ wine bar who generously sponsored tops and hoodies for the tournament.
We would like to thank the team and all the parents for the effort they put into fundraising for the trip doing cake sales, selling raffle tickets, bag packing and cash for clobber.
Finally, we would like to thank the girls, they represented Moycullen really well, making friends with teams from other countries, particularly Israel. They were so well behaved both on and off the court and showed great courage and tenacity against strong competition. They did the club and Moycullen proud!
