Moycullen and Titans u15 girls entered Sunday’s county B final having split their two matches during the season. Both teams were confident of getting a win and the first quarter opened with the teams going basket for basket in a close fought period. Moycullen however started the second quarter strong and opened a considerable 10 point lead, with baskets from Aoife Burke, Ruth Bradley, Sarah Robb and Aoife Dempey opening the game up for Moycullen. But just as things looked good for Moycullen, Titans got aggressive and mounted a comeback. Repeatedly getting to the free throw line Titans clawed the lead back to 3 to end the half 21-18 to Moycullen.
Titans continued their aggressive play in the third and continued drawing fouls, with the referees awarding them numerous free throws. Titans took the lead, and things went from bad to worse for Moycullen as Ailbhe Power fouled out in the third quarter. Molly Hynes and Katie Hosty also picked up their 4th fouls, and it looked as if Moycullen were dead in the water.
With 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter Titans led 33-25. Molly Hynes re-entered the game with strict instructions to not foul and be aggressive on offence. Molly began driving hard to the basket and drawing fouls, causing two of Titans best players to foul out. The defence of Moycullen was sublime, and guards Katie Hosty and Ella Whyte did a great job of curtailing Titans star guard Ellie Lydon, getting steals and pushing the fast break. With crucial free throws from Katie Higgins and Molly Hynes, Moycullen managed to take the lead in the final minute 34-33. With 17 seconds left Titans called a timeout, leaving them with one final possession to win the game. Moycullen’s great defence was not to bet though, as they got the steal and Moycullen dribbled out the clock to a well earned team victory.
