Moycullen parish can be proud of their Under 16 Basketball heroes who won the Galway Title in a thriller against local rivals Maree last week. Maree were pre-match favourites with three of the squad from their team who recently went to the U18 Schools World competition. Moycullen are a very young team with only 2 players who were actual Under 16’s. However, such odds don’t seem to phase coach Lyons.

Paul Kelly – added the Galway Under 16 Community Games to his recent Under 14 Player of the Year Award.

Moycullen went down early and were down 12 at the half.  However, they moved the ball better in second half and with some excellent team defence and Under 14 players Paul Kelly and James Connaire hitting a series of three’s they dragged themselves back into contention. James Lyons played every role from 1 to 5, doing whatever was needed. The Mulkerrins twins hustled well on defence and shut down  much bigger Maree’ players. Moycullen finally went up one in last minute and James Lyons got to the line and made both free throws to ice the game and win by 3. Great game from a great squad.
