President’s Cup: SSE Airtricity Moycullen in Cup Final after Titanic victory

To finish off an exciting weekend of basketball SSE Airtricity Moycullen beat fellow Galwegians Titans 80 – 75 in overtime at the Mardyke in Cork today.  While the Moycullen lads led for most of the game Titans went into the lead late on and led by 5 with less than 2 minutes left. They still led by 2 with 15 secs left but a great steal by James Loughnane saw him go coast to coast, get fouled and make 2 pressure shots to tie it up.  SSE Airtricity Moycullen took an early lead in OT and never looked back. James Loughnane, with 19 points, was unquestionably the MVP but we had a lot of contenders for next best! Ronan O’Sullivan and Paul Freeman were the front-runners with 17 and 15 points respectively. Paul really showed his worth when, having picked up 3 fouls in the first quarter, he finished out the game strongly. No doubt Paul had some mixed emotions as he had coached Titans to their most successful ever season last year.

There will be lots more to report on this classic win and photos to follow. In the meantime, check out a short report on Basketball Ireland website HERE.  Get along to see the heros when they take on Team Left Bank Kilkenny next Saturday at 5.30 in Kingfisher. Team Left Bank lost out in a semi-final today to C&S Blue Demons who will be our opposition in the final. SSE Airtricity Moycullen will join the Under 20 men who also qualified for the National Cup Final where they face Belfast Star. That all takes place in two weeks (23rd-25th January). There should be some exodus to the Arena that weekend.
