Buoyed on by the recent announcement of the support and sponsorship form SSE Renewables, Moycullen had their first home game of the Premier League season on Saturday night in NUIG against UCD Marian. Both teams settled into the game reasonably well and the 1st quarter was a tight and exciting affair, SSE Renewables Moycullen led by Callaghan & Cunningham were proving more than a match for their opponents and with some excellent defence, they went into the quarter break down 3 points.
The 2nd quarter was again a nip and tuck affair up to 3:45 to go in the half, however, in the space of 1 minute the referees awarded 3 Technical fouls; one for a Moycullen player and 2 for the coach. This gave UCD Marian a massive boost and what was turning into a great game was suddenly a 20 point lead for the Dublin team at the interval. SSE Renewables were never able to get back into the game in the 2nd quarter and the game ended in an easy win for Marian.
On a positive note the young team continues to develop and with more games they will certainly get the breakthrough that they deserve. Tomas Gilson is becoming more accustomed to the demands of the Premier League in his debut season, Darragh Mulkerrins once again did a great job when introduced and Ian Burke probably had his best game of the campaign. Eoghan Maxwell put in another superb shift despite carrying a severe ankle injury into the game and his leadership qualities have been immense. Mike Callaghan once again had an excellent game especially on the boards where he picked up an unbelievable 20 rebounds during the course of the game. Next up is an away assignment against Belfast Star on Sunday, but prior to that Paul O’Brien has the honour of representing the club when the Premier League select Team play against Wales in Dublin on Saturday. Best of luck to Paul and the team.
