A big crowd attended the season launch held in The Forge on Wednesday 16th October. Chairperson Haulie Dowd outlined the 20 or so teams that are taking to the courts this season. Highlights of the evening were the presentation of Salva Camps as Club Coach and Technical Director and American player Mike Callaghan and the announcement of the sponsorship of the Premier League team by SSE Renewals.
We are delighted to have Salva Camps back as Club Coach & Technical Director with overall responsibility for the development of our youth teams and players. He will also be Head Coach of the Premier League team where last year he did a superb job. Already we’ve seen this come to fruition with our underage teams benefiting from his excellent coaching. Salva brings his considerable experience to the Club having played 5 years at ACB & 6 years at LEB level in Spain. ACB is recognised to be the best league in Europe.
Mike Callaghan – our new American for this season, Michael joins the club from Wesleyan University in Connecticut where he had an excellent career on his way to scoring over 1,000 points with his University (an outstanding achievement). He had a stellar college career culminating with an excellent senior season with Wesleyan where he played 32 minutes per game and averaged 15 points and 7 rebounds. In his last two years in College he was named to the All League team. He has fitted in superbly with the team this year and he has already shown himself to be an excellent player, averaging 18 points & 12 rebounds, who will be a force to reckon with over the course of the year.
SSE Renewables and its sister company Airtricity have strong track records in supporting local communities and in supporting sport at all levels, whether on the national or regional stage. They’re proud supporters of Irish sports – whether it’s through SSE Renewables’ sponsorship of the Walled City Marathon or the Airtricity League, to name just two – and we’re delighted that the team at SSE Renewables are adding their support to our club at this time.
