Maigh Cuilinn produced a devastating third-quarter display to sweep aside Dublin visitors Tolka Rovers 81–57 in the opening round of the National Cup at Sportlann Naomh Anna in Leitir Móir on Saturday afternoon, booking their place in the quarter-finals with a remarkable second-half performance.

Trailing by three points at half-time after a closely contested opening twenty minutes, Maigh Cuilinn emerged from the interval transformed, scoring an extraordinary 24 unanswered points in little over six minutes to turn a narrow deficit into a commanding 21-point advantage.

It was a remarkable passage of basketball in which everything seemed to go right for the home side. Their offence flowed, their defensive intensity overwhelmed the visitors, and a contest that had been finely balanced was effectively decided in a matter of minutes.

Grant Olsson led the scoring for Maigh Cuilinn with 19 points, while Antonio Molina added 16 and Ivan Basic contributed 11. However, this was very much a collective performance, with eleven players getting on the scoresheet and contributions coming from throughout the squad.

The opening half had given little indication of the drama to come.

Maigh Cuilinn edged a competitive first quarter 18–17, but Tolka, despite arriving in Connemara without a National League victory to their name this season, proved determined opponents and gradually began to take control in the second period.

With just two minutes remaining before half-time, the Dublin side had established a seven-point advantage and appeared to have the momentum firmly in their favour.

However, the seeds of Maigh Cuilinn’s remarkable second-half turnaround were sown in the closing stages of that quarter, thanks in no small part to the determination of Ivan Basic.

Despite being the smallest player on the court, Basic somehow emerged with an offensive rebound among the taller bodies following a missed Maigh Cuilinn shot, immediately putting the ball back up for two valuable points.

Shortly afterwards, Basic was again at the centre of the action, pushing the ball upcourt on a fast break before finding Olsson for a finish at the basket.

Those four unanswered points reduced the deficit to just three, with Maigh Cuilinn trailing 35–32 at the interval. What had threatened to become a difficult afternoon was suddenly a very manageable contest.

Whatever was said in the Maigh Cuilinn dressing room at half-time certainly had the desired effect.

The home side returned to the court with an intensity and purpose that Tolka simply could not match, launching into one of the most extraordinary spells of basketball seen from Maigh Cuilinn in recent seasons.

James Loughnane, Olsson, Basic, Molina, Mark Convery and Dylan Cunningham all contributed scores as the home side attacked with pace and confidence, repeatedly finding opportunities before the visitors could organise their defence.

Just as impressive was the relentless defensive pressure. Maigh Cuilinn registered seven steals during the decisive spell, repeatedly disrupting Tolka’s possessions and turning defensive stops into immediate scoring opportunities.

The visitors were left reeling as the home side scored basket after basket without reply.

By the time Donagh McDonagh connected on a three-pointer with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Maigh Cuilinn had completed an astonishing 24–0 run and transformed a 35–32 half-time deficit into a 56–35 lead.

In barely six minutes, the contest had been turned completely on its head.

Tolka eventually managed to stem the tide and reduce the deficit slightly before the end of the period, but Maigh Cuilinn had still outscored their opponents 26–8 in the quarter to take a 58–43 advantage into the final ten minutes.

Any hopes of a Dublin comeback were quickly extinguished as Maigh Cuilinn began the fourth quarter with another burst, scoring nine of the opening eleven points to extend their advantage to 67–45 with less than eight minutes remaining.

At that stage, the result was beyond any realistic doubt, and the home side were able to see out the remaining minutes comfortably.

Olsson’s 19 points capped another strong performance from the Maigh Cuilinn captain, while Molina’s 16 continued his encouraging recent scoring form. Basic’s contribution was particularly important, not only for his 11 points but for the energy and determination that helped spark the turnaround before half-time.

Convery added eight points, while the return of Loughnane, whose intelligent movement and cutting ability had been missed in recent outings, provided another valuable offensive dimension.

McDonagh and Darragh Kelly contributed five points apiece, with every Maigh Cuilinn player making a contribution to an excellent team victory.

The result was a welcome response to last weekend’s disappointing National League defeat in Killorglin and demonstrated the level of basketball Maigh Cuilinn are capable of producing when their defence and offence operate in tandem.

Having made the journey west from Dublin, Tolka were ultimately undone by a devastating spell of home basketball that left them with no way back.

For Maigh Cuilinn, the reward is a place in the National Cup quarter-finals against league table topper Carrick Cruisers but, importantly, a home fixture as they look to continue their cup run.
