Maigh Cuilinn’s National League season came to a heartbreaking conclusion on Saturday night as a brave effort on the road fell just short against Portlaoise Panthers, a disastrous stretch late in the second quarter ultimately proving decisive in an 80–73 defeat.

After six months and 22 games of the regular season, the Galway side’s playoff hopes ended on the final weekend, but not without a spirited performance that pushed Portlaoise hard in front of a packed home crowd.

Maigh Cuilinn began superbly. An aggressive Liam Moloney set the early tone with six quick points as the visitors attacked the basket with confidence. Strong defensive intensity and composed ball movement allowed them to control the opening exchanges, and a John Hackett three-pointer on the final possession of the first quarter gave Maigh Cuilinn a deserved 22–15 lead.

For much of the second quarter the visitors remained in control, but the momentum gradually began to shift. American guard Amiri Stewart and the experienced Spanish forward Xabier Arriaga began to assert themselves offensively, combining for 18 points during the period to keep Portlaoise firmly in the contest.

Even so, Maigh Cuilinn were still leading midway through the quarter and looked well capable of maintaining their advantage. The turning point came in the closing minute before halftime. With Portlaoise edging in front, the hosts, buoyed by the energy of a loud home support; rattled off six unanswered points to close the half, transforming a narrow game into a 43–35 lead at the break.

That momentum carried directly into the third quarter.

Stewart found another gear, adding nine points in the period, while Maigh Cuilinn’s previously balanced scoring attack temporarily stalled. Grant Olsson did his best to keep the visitors in touch, scoring eight points in the third, but the Galway side struggled to convert opportunities, shooting just 25 percent from inside the arc and 33 percent from three-point range during the quarter.

By the end of the period Portlaoise had stretched their lead to 63–50, leaving Maigh Cuilinn with a mountain to climb in the final ten minutes.

To their credit, they refused to fold. A determined fourth-quarter push saw the deficit cut to five points at one stage as Maigh Cuilinn threatened a dramatic late comeback. But the composure and experience of Arriaga proved vital for the hosts as they steadied themselves and closed out the contest to secure an 80–73 victory.

While the result ended Maigh Cuilinn’s playoff ambitions, the season contained plenty of positives for the club. Several younger players continued their development at National League level, with John Hynes, Rory O’Sullivan and Liam Moloney all making strong strides during the campaign. Brendan Hardiman and John Hackett, in their first seasons at this level, also showed they are more than capable of competing in the league.

Captain Grant Olsson once again led from the front throughout the year, while Antonio Molina and Ivan Basic, now well established within the squad, continued to provide consistent scoring and creativity. Experienced figures Dylan Cunningham, James Loughnane and Stephen Tummon also played key leadership roles during the campaign.

The playoffs may have slipped away on the final weekend, but with a core group that blends experience and emerging talent, the future looks bright for Maigh Cuilinn.
