Maigh Cuilinn 84 – 77 Maree
University of Galway Sports Arena

Maigh Cuilinn produced one of their most complete performances of the season on Saturday night, leading from the opening minutes and never relinquishing control as they defeated Galway rivals Maree 84–77 in a derby rich in intensity and quality.
Maree struck first through Daniel Oyeleye, but that brief advantage lasted seconds. Captain Grant Olsson responded immediately with a three-pointer, and on the next possession Dylan Cunningham followed suit to put Maigh Cuilinn 6–2 ahead — a lead they would hold for the remainder of the contest.
The opening quarter was tightly contested. Maigh Cuilinn edged in front, Maree reeled them back, and a spectacular block-and-coast-to-coast finish from Isaiah Taylor brought the visitors within two at 24–22. It felt like the prelude to a classic derby battle.
Instead, the second quarter saw Maigh Cuilinn seize control.
Winning the period 24–13, they surged into a 48–35 halftime lead, their highest-scoring half of the season. Back-to-back three-pointers from James Loughnane punctuated a spell in which the hosts were outstanding at both ends. Defensively, they moved their feet, rotated with discipline and forced Maree to earn every score. Offensively, they repeatedly broke down a porous defence, driving into the lane at will before kicking out to open shooters.
The theme of the night was set during that decisive stretch.
For Maree, the one constant was Taylor’s individual brilliance. He poured in 19 first-half points and would finish with an extraordinary 43 — an astonishing 55 percent of his team’s total output. Even under close attention, he found ways to score, delivering a series of spectacular finishes that at times drew appreciative applause from the home support.
Yet while Taylor dazzled, Maigh Cuilinn countered with collective purpose.
Olsson was immense, finishing with 31 points in a captain’s display of authority. Brendan Hardiman recorded a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds, battling relentlessly on the glass. Cunningham delivered a masterclass in post and help defence, while Loughnane, Ivan Basic and Liam Moloney were persistent disruptors, turning defence into transition opportunities. Antonio Molina, John Hynes and Rory O’Sullivan each played key man-marking roles in limiting Maree’s secondary threats.

Maree won the third quarter 19–16 and the fourth 23–20, but curiously never truly threatened to turn the tide. They narrowed the gap to five late in the fourth, only for Basic and Olsson to answer immediately with composed baskets that restored breathing room and extinguished any genuine comeback hopes.
In truth, the seven-point final margin did not fully reflect Maigh Cuilinn’s control. From the early three-pointers that established the tone to the disciplined defensive stands down the stretch, they managed the contest with maturity and composure.
The result throws the playoff picture into further chaos as the race for positions heads toward its dramatic conclusion, with Maigh Cuilinn firmly back in the conversation.
