Cumann Cispheile Mhaigh Cuilinn is thrilled to share the news that our Chairperson, John Cunningham, has been elected to the Galway Area Basketball Board (GABB) Hall of Fame for 2025.
John’s contribution to basketball in Galway spans decades—first as a standout player, then as coach, and now as Chairperson of our club. He is Maigh Cuilinn’s longest-serving Senior Men’s Head Coach, having led our Superleague team for eight seasons with integrity, passion, and a deep belief in developing players and fostering team spirit.
His philosophy, rooted in hard work and respect for the game, shaped a generation of players. Whether it was a big National Cup win or the daily grind of training, John brought energy, care, and commitment to every moment. Though he stepped down as coach last year, his leadership continues to guide the club.
This latest honour sees him join esteemed company—Gerry Nihill and Gerry Riordan, two other Maigh Cuilinn stalwarts, were inducted into the Hall of Fame just last year. The trio represent generations of leadership, dedication, and love for the game that continue to shape our club’s identity
But the honours for Maigh Cuilinn don’t stop there.
Two more of our own have been recognised for their achievements on the international stage:
Orla Cunningham has been recognised for her selection to the Ireland U17 Girls team
Nollaig Cunningham has been honoured for representing Ireland with the Over 50 Men’s Masters team
These recognitions are a testament to the strength of basketball in Maigh Cuilinn—from youth to experience, from grassroots to international courts.
All awardees will be honoured at the GABB Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 21st at 7pm in the Connacht Hotel.
Congratulations to John, Orla, and Nollaig—we’re incredibly proud of everything you’ve achieved and grateful for the inspiration you provide to our players, members, and community.
Maigh Cuilinn AbĂş!
