It was with immense sadness and disbelief that we learnt of Denis Phelan’s untimely passing on Friday 5th March.
A hugely valued part of the club, Denis was a member of the Galway League team that re-entered local competition in the late 80’s after a long hiatus. After only a few years back in the local league, Denis was a key member of the team that won promotion from Division 2 and thus be in the team that played Division 1 for the first time.
He had a great eye and head for the game, immense strength on the court and as all those that had the pleasure of playing with him, he never saw a shot that he didn’t like and rarely turned down…….
After his competitive playing days drew to a close, he continued being a long-standing participant in our St. Stephen’s Day Blitz where his half-court shot was always a threat. He also branched into a coaching role, taking up the mantle when the club needed coaches in the underage section.
His great demeanour, wit, sense of fun, conversation and chuckle will be sorely missed by all in Moycullen Basketball Club & the wider Moycullen Community.
Our deepest condolences to his wife Nora, children Cian, Aine & Donnahcadh and their partners, granddaughter Sienna, sisters Orla & Fiona, the extended family and friends.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
We take the opportunity also to remember the passing of our dear friend and great club member Pat Griffin who passed away 12 months ago.
