Another superb occasion down in the school in Moycullen for our annual St. Stephen’s Day blitz saw Paul Kelly & Dylan Cunningham’s team overcome Patrick Lyons & James Connaire’s team to win this years edition of the Blitz. The favourites tag didn’t affect the winners over the course of the day as they were rarely troubled on their way to a dominant win in the final.
The action started at 9:10 in really nice conditions and allowed the teams to entertain the early morning St. Stephen’s Day revellers to some outstanding displays.
However, the weather changed soon after this game and for the next 2 1/2 hours the conditions were really tough for players and the big crowd.
Thankfully by the time we came to the last few games of the group phase, the weather cleared up and it was dry and calm the rest of the way.
End of group games; Kyle & Paul O’Brien’s team gets revenge as they top Group 2 with James Loughnane & Joseph Tummon second and knocking out Eoghan Kelly & Josh Marvesley’s by 1 point. The first and second place teams in Group 2 played out a thriller in the early afternoon games with the teams going to double OT.
Paul & Dylan top Group 1 with Patrick & James Connaire’s team in second. Unfortunately the other two teams in this group never really got going and it was a case of who would top the group between the two main teams.
Two super semi-finals ensued where Patrick’s team was just a bit too good for Kyle’s team and they qualified for the final by 7 points. In the 2nd semi Paul’s team had a much easier game where they ran out comfortable winners over James’ team.
And so on to the final where in truth the game was never in doubt as Paul’s team was in complete control throughout. Credit to Patrick’s team who never gave up but every question they posed was answered in kind by the winners as the 2019 Blitz Champions were crowned.
To the organisers of the event and the Blitz draw; Gerald, James, Eoghan, Dylan, Patrick, James thanks for doing such a great job. Thanks to the refs of all the games; no major controversy over the course of the day…. Also a big thanks to the score keepers and time keepers
A huge thanks to all those who brought down some much needed teas, coffees, soup and other warm beverages. Snacks, sandwiches and treats were also much appreciated. Many thanks to the Gilson’s, Egan’s & Cunningham’s.
Mark Loughnane wins “The Spirit of the Blitz Award” for once again epitomising everything that is great about this fantastic tournament.
So Dylan gets onto the Hall of Fame, Paul and Ronan Waters gets their first win, Kevin McDonald rolls back the years and wins MVP, Conor Egan was inspired, Sean Hynes earns another win*** and David Naughton gets his first Blitz win in only his second appearance.
Also a big thanks to the school for once again lending us the court for the day; much appreciated.
We’re already looking forward to next year!!!!!!!
