defeat UUJ in dramatic Intervarsity final
It had to be one of the most dramatic finished ever to a National Competition.
Fifteen points down as the game approached the last quarter, the Galway
boys somehow found the inspiration to turn the game on its head and overhaul
UUJ for a 60-59 win that looked impossible five minutes earlier. Credit
the confidence , skill , togetherness and determination of this remarkalble
group of Maree and Moycullen players that have brought the first Intervarsity
to NUIG in a generation. The game was billed as a 'Butler v Duke' matchup,
with the all local team from Gallway facing a recruited line up of post
grad scolarship players from various parts of Ireland led by an American
NCAA Division One player. The UUJ lineup was the same as the Ulster Elks
Superleague team, so the win by a Galway Team, of almost entirely undergraduate,
local players was all the more remarka
The
men's Superleague team rose to the occasion in their final home
game of the season, producing a magnificent team display to beat
an inform Ulster Elks by six points in NUIG. Puff Summers ignited
the big home support with a blistering 22 first half points, Elks
having no matchup for his quickness and scoring touch., Moycullen
set the pace from the start and at one stage had built a sixteen
point advantage, the backcourt pace of Dowd, Loughnane and Summers
creating all sorts of problems for Elks. Garnett Griffin had his
best game of the season, matching up very well with the Elks american.
Garnett's power dunk at the end of a fast break was one of the highlights
of his confident performance. Cian Nihill closed down Irish senior
International Ian O'Boyle and added 21 points in an impressive display,
including two clutch baskets in the final minute to seal the win.
Veterans John and Nollaig Cunningham, sharing forty minutes court
time between them showed all the experience gained over long careers
with two big performances.. John hit four invaluable points in the
last quarter and Nollaig grabbed some great boards, including an
offensive rebound in the last play of the game.
The game was sponsored by by former Moycullen senior players, many
of whom were present to cheer on the new generation.
At half time National Community games medals were presented to the
U'13 Boys team, perhaps the next generation......Team

Community Games U13 Girls Final
Moycullen led the game from the start and had built a solid
looking lead as the game entered the closing minutes. But Claregalway
made some great scores including a buzzer beating shot to tie the game
and send it into overtime. Moycullen then had to come from behing to send
the game into a second overtime. With only ten seconds
left at the end of the second period of overtime the game looked to have
slipped away from Moycullen as Claregalway held a two point lead. But
Moycullen regained possession and Megan O'Donnell scored a great basket
to tie the game. Megan was fouled while shooting and she made the free
shot to win the final. Moycullen had other great performances, especially
from Catherine Connaire, Aine McDonagh and Sorcha Whyte. Moycullen now
go on to represent Galway at the Connacht Community Games Finals.
